16 Nov Aeceriber leads the creation of the Iberdefense Operating Group due to the boost of the retinto in Extremadura
Livestock production and the processing of Iberian pork are major drivers of the surplus that the external trade balance of Extremadura presents thanks to the export of consumer products. All this based on its important genetic heritage which highlights the four main pure varieties of Iberian pigs traditionally accepted within the Official Catalog of Cattle Races of Spain, two with promotion character (Entrepelado and Retinto) and two with character of special protection (Black Lampiño and Torbiscal). However, in recent years, as noted by Aeceriber in a press release, the Retinto variety has been imposed on the rest of pure varieties exploited in Extremadura, mainly due to ignorance about the genetic value and the lack of promotion of the rest of pure varieties at an industrial level. Consequently, this situation endangers the sustainability of the rest of the pure varieties, some of which are currently in danger of extinction.
With the support of the Junta de Extremadura and the European Agricultural Fund for Rural Development (FEADER), through the program of grants for the creation of Operative Groups of the European Association for Innovation (AEI) in terms of productivity and agricultural sustainability, It has set up the Iberdefense Operative Group whose objective is the use of genetic resources through its sustainable incorporation into the value chain of the Iberian pig.
Iberdefense is led by the Spanish Association of Iberian Pig Breeders (Aeceriber), and has been promoted together with the Regulatory Board of the D.O.P. "Dehesa de Extremadura", the livestock company Ibéricos Puros de Extremadura, S.L. and the Center for Scientific and Technological Research of Extremadura (CICYTEX). Additionally, it has the collaboration of the Center for Research and Development of the Iberian Pig (CIDCI-INIA), the Diputación de Badajoz, the Animal Selection and Reproduction Center of Extremadura (CENSYRA), and the innovation agent Imasde Agroalimentaria, S.L.
Iberdefense is working to promote a new innovation pilot project focused on knowing the value of the pure varieties less exploited at present, considering that the high cost of maintaining their nuclei of selection and the increasing consanguinity among the populations supposes a high risk for their disappearance . These varieties will be studied comparatively along with other major varieties, with the aim of designing genetic crossbreeding between pure varieties that allow the hybrid vigor of the descendants to be strengthened and to reach new, more sustainable genetics and better adapted to the demands of farmers and industrialists.
Iberdefense proposes a system of innovation integrated by livestock, knowledge generator and interprofessional association that allows to better take on the risks of the new innovation pilot project, and fits in clearly with the challenges of the AEI focused on creating knowledge to improve competitiveness and sustainability, ensuring a viable food production, guaranteeing a sustainable management of natural resources and contributing to a balanced territorial development.
